Sashiko reported that on 32-bit systems, if an attacker crafts size in
the bootconfig footer such that adding BOOTCONFIG_FOOTER_SIZE wraps around
(for instance, if size is 0xFFFFFFFF), the size check in
load_xbc_from_initrd() can be bypassed:
if (stat.st_size < size + BOOTCONFIG_FOOTER_SIZE) {
pr_err("bootconfig size is too big\n");
return -E2BIG;
}
Furthermore, on 64-bit systems with an initrd > 4.29 GB, comparing a
corrupted 32-bit size (e.g. 0xFFFFFFFF) against
stat.st_size - BOOTCONFIG_FOOTER_SIZE can also bypass the check if
size is not bounded. Similarly, load_xbc_file() passes 64-bit stat.st_size
directly into the 32-bit int size parameter of load_xbc_fd(), truncating
large standalone files (>= 2GB).
In both cases, passing 0xFFFFFFFF to load_xbc_fd() truncates to -1,
resulting in malloc(0), an integer overflow in read(), and an
out-of-bounds null-byte write.
Fix this by:
1. Rejecting size > XBC_DATA_MAX or
size > stat.st_size - BOOTCONFIG_FOOTER_SIZE in load_xbc_from_initrd().
2. Rejecting stat.st_size > XBC_DATA_MAX in load_xbc_file() before passing
it to load_xbc_fd().
3. Checking size < 0 || size > XBC_DATA_MAX defensively in load_xbc_fd().

The previous patch builds tools/bootconfig during 'make prepare' to
render the embedded bootconfig cmdline, but nothing removes it on

Wire a bootconfig_clean hook into the top-level clean target so the
compiled tool and its objects are removed by make clean, matching the
prepare-wired tools/objtool and tools/bpf/resolve_btfids.
The hook runs tools/bootconfig's Makefile via $(MAKE), which the kernel
build invokes with -rR (MAKEFLAGS += -rR). -rR drops the built-in $(RM)
variable, so the existing "$(RM) -f ..." clean recipe would expand to a
bare "-f ..." and fail. Spell the recipe with a literal "rm -f" so it
keeps working both standalone and when invoked from Kbuild.

Add the build-time pipeline that renders the "kernel" subtree of
CONFIG_BOOT_CONFIG_EMBED_FILE into a flat cmdline string and stashes
it in .init.rodata as embedded_kernel_cmdline[]. A follow-up patch
adds the runtime helper that prepends this string to boot_command_line
during early architecture setup so parse_early_param() sees the values.
The build wires up:
tools/bootconfig -C kernel - userspace tool already shared with
lib/bootconfig.c, used here in -C mode
to render a bootconfig file to a cmdline
lib/embedded-cmdline.S - .incbin's the rendered text plus a NUL
(listed under the EXTRA BOOT CONFIG
MAINTAINERS entry)
lib/Makefile rule - runs tools/bootconfig at build time
Makefile prepare dep - ensures tools/bootconfig is built first,
same pattern as tools/objtool and
tools/bpf/resolve_btfids
Drop the test target from tools/bootconfig/Makefile's default 'all'
recipe so that hooking the binary into the kernel build does not run
test-bootconfig.sh on every prepare. The tests stay available as
'make -C tools/bootconfig test', matching the convention of
tools/objtool and tools/bpf/resolve_btfids whose 'all' targets only
build the binary.
Require BOOT_CONFIG_EMBED_FILE to be non-empty before the new option
can be enabled, otherwise tools/bootconfig -C runs against an empty
file and prints a parse error on every kernel build.
The feature gates on CONFIG_ARCH_SUPPORTS_CMDLINE_FROM_BOOTCONFIG, a
silent symbol arches select once they've wired the prepend call into
setup_arch(). No arch selects it in this patch, so the user-visible
CONFIG_CMDLINE_FROM_BOOTCONFIG is not yet enableable; when an arch
later opts in, the runtime behavior is added by the follow-up patches.
tools/bootconfig also installs on target systems, so its own Makefile
keeps $(CC) and stays cross-buildable as a standalone tool. The kernel
build, which runs the tool on the build host during prepare, instead
forces CC=$(HOSTCC) from a dedicated tools/bootconfig rule and clears
CROSS_COMPILE= in the sub-make. Without that clear, an LLVM=1 cross
build would inherit CROSS_COMPILE and tools/scripts/Makefile.include
would inject --target=/--sysroot= flags into the host clang invocation,
producing a target binary that fails to exec ("Exec format error").
embedded-cmdline.S places the rendered string in its own .init.rodata
subsection (.init.rodata.embed_cmdline) with the "a" (allocatable,
read-only) flag and %progbits. lib/bootconfig-data.S already places
the embedded bootconfig blob in .init.rodata with the "aw" flag
(xbc_init() rewrites separators in place, so that data must be
writable). Using a distinct subsection name avoids the ld.lld section-
type mismatch that would otherwise arise from mixing "a" and "aw"
under the same name; the linker's "*(.init.rodata .init.rodata.*)"
glob still folds both into the init image and frees them after boot.
A follow-up patch wires the build-time tools/bootconfig into the
top-level clean target.

- bootconfig: move xbc_snprint_cmdline() to lib/bootconfig.c
Move the xbc_snprint_cmdline() function and its buffer from

can be reused by userspace tools.
- render kernel.* subtree as cmdline string with -C
Add a new -C option to print the kernel.* subtree as a flat

tools/bootconfig: render kernel.* subtree as cmdline string with -C
bootconfig: move xbc_snprint_cmdline() to lib/bootconfig.c
Add a -C option that finds the "kernel" subtree of a bootconfig file
and prints it as a flat, space-separated cmdline string by calling the
shared xbc_snprint_cmdline() renderer. An empty or absent kernel.*
subtree produces empty output and exits successfully.
This lets the kernel build embed a bootconfig file as a plain cmdline
string at build time, so embedded bootconfig values can reach
parse_early_param() during architecture setup without parsing the
bootconfig at runtime.
The renderer is intentionally limited to the kernel.* subtree: that is
the only thing the kernel build needs to embed; init.* and other
subtrees keep going through the runtime parser.
Example of this new mode:
# cat /tmp/test.bconf
kernel {
foo = bar
baz = "hello world"
arr = 1, 2
}
init.foo = nope
# ./tools/bootconfig/bootconfig -C /tmp/test.bconf
foo=bar baz="hello world" arr=1 arr=2 %

Terminate the value search for a key if it hits a newline and make
the value empty.
When we pass a bootconfig with an empty value terminated by the
newline, like below::
foo =
bar = value
Current bootconfig interprets it as a single entry::
foo = "bar = value";
The Documentation/admin-guide/bootconfig.rst defines the value
itself is terminated by newline:
The value has to be terminated by semi-colon (``;``) or newline (``\n``).
but it does not define when the value search is terminated.
This changes the behavior to be more line-oriented, so that it is
clearer in how it works.
- The value search of key-value pair will be terminated by a comment
or newline.
- The value search of an array will continue beyond comments and
newlines.
Thus, with this update, the above example is interpreted as::
foo = "";
bar = "value";
And the below example will cause a syntax error because "bar" is expected
as a key but it has ','.
foo =
bar, buz
According to this change, one wrong example config is updated.

Commit 26dda57695 "tools/bootconfig: Cleanup bootconfig footer size
calculations" replaced some expressions of type int with the
BOOTCONFIG_FOOTER_SIZE macro, which expands to an expression of type
size_t, which is unsigned.
On 32-bit architectures with LFS enabled (i.e. off_t is 64-bit), the
seek offset of -BOOTCONFIG_FOOTER_SIZE now turns into a positive
value.
Fix this by casting the size to off_t before negating it.
Just in case someone changes BOOTCONFIG_MAGIC_LEN to have type size_t
later, do the same thing to the seek offset of -BOOTCONFIG_MAGIC_LEN.

Since commit 6c40624930 ("bootconfig: Increase max nodes of bootconfig
from 1024 to 8192 for DCC support") increased the max number of bootconfig
node to 8192, the bootconfig testcase of the max number of nodes fails.
To fix this issue, we can not simply increase the number in the test script
because the test bootconfig file becomes too big (>32KB). To fix that, we
can use a combination of three alphabets (26^3 = 17576). But with that,
we can not express the 8193 (just one exceed from the limitation) because
it also exceeds the max size of bootconfig. So, the first 26 nodes will just
use one alphabet.
With this fix, test-bootconfig.sh passes all tests.

Support mixing a value and subkeys under a key. Since kernel cmdline
options will support "aaa.bbb=value1 aaa.bbb.ccc=value2", it is
better that the bootconfig supports such configuration too.
Note that this does not change syntax itself but just accepts
mixed value and subkeys e.g.
key = value1
key.subkey = value2
But this is not accepted;
key {
value1
subkey = value2
}
That will make value1 as a subkey.
Also, the order of the value node under a key is fixed. If there
are a value and subkeys, the value is always the first child node
of the key. Thus if user specifies subkeys first, e.g.
key.subkey = value1
key = value2
In the program (and /proc/bootconfig), it will be shown as below
key = value2
key.subkey = value1

are using "next" field of the xbc_node.
Thus this changes the array values to use "child" field in

test it easily.

Align the bootconfig applied initrd image size to 4. To fill the gap,
the bootconfig command uses null characters in between the bootconfig
data and the footer. This will expands the footer size but don't change
the checksum.
Thus the block image of the initrd file with bootconfig is as follows.
[initrd][bootconfig][(pad)][size][csum]["#BOOTCONFIG\n"]
