When building in a kernel tree prior to commit b055f4c431 ("sorttable:
Move ELF parsing into scripts/elf-parse.[ch]") with clang-23 or newer,
which implements a new warning under -Wunused-but-set-variable for
static global variable, there is a warning from sorttable because
long_size is unused when MCOUNT_SORT_ENABLED is not set:
scripts/sorttable.c:452:12: error: variable 'long_size' set but not used [-Werror,-Wunused-but-set-global]
452 | static int long_size;
| ^
Mark long_size as __maybe_unused to avoid inserting more ugly #ifdef
directives while insuring the warning does not reappear, as the
aforementioned change does not alter the uses of long_size, so it
appears to be coincidence that the warning disappears after this
refactoring.

In this configuration, MAX_NUMNODES is 4. clang unrolls the for loop in
setup_node_to_cpumask_map() past this, which triggers the fortify check
when accessing node_to_cpumask_map on the theoretical fifth loop iteration
because it would be an out of bounds write.
Make it clear to clang that nr_node_ids is bounded by MAX_NUMNODES due to
the logic in setup_nr_node_ids() by early returning in
setup_node_to_cpumask_map() should that condition be violated.

After commit dfc256dac5 ("calibrate: Rework delay timer calibration"),
certain ARM configurations (such as multi_v5_defconfig) hang during

improperly converted to delay_read_timer(), resulting in get_cycles()
returning 0 even when the timer has been read or an uninitialized stack

After a recent upstream LLVM change to start generating jump and lookup
tables in switch statements in more instances [1], linking the
compressed x86 boot image when CONFIG_KERNEL_ZSTD is enabled fails with:
ld.lld: error: Unexpected run-time relocations (.rela) detected!
Dumping the relocations in misc.o, which is the only file influenced by
CONFIG_KERNEL_ZSTD in the decompressor, shows dynamic relocations to
some string constants, which correspond to the string literals in the
switch statement in handle_zstd_error():
Relocation section '.rela.data.rel.ro' at offset 0x277b0 contains 31 entries:
Offset Info Type Symbol's Value Symbol's Name + Addend
0000000000000000 0000006600000001 R_X86_64_64 0000000000000000 .rodata.str1.1 + 73a

...
This optimization is problematic for the decompressor environment, as it
is built as -fPIE without any explicit absolute references (as described
at the top of misc.c) while not applying any dynamic relocations, hence
the linker assertion. To opt out of this optimization, which is of
little value in this special early boot code, and to mirror the other
x86 startup code in arch/x86/boot/startup, disable jump tables in the
decompressor.

After commit 2db1ec80dfd5 ("MIPS: VDSO: Fold MIPS_DISABLE_VDSO into
MIPS_GENERIC_GETTIMEOFDAY"), building ARCH=mips allnoconfig with LLVM=1

dynamic relocations:
llvm-readelf: warning: 'arch/mips/vdso/vdso.so.dbg.raw': invalid PT_DYNAMIC size (0xa4)
llvm-readelf: warning: 'arch/mips/vdso/vdso.so.dbg.raw': PT_DYNAMIC dynamic table is invalid: SHT_DYNAMIC will be used
The blamed commit alters the link order of objects into vdso.so.raw,
placing vgettimeofday.o after sigreturn.o. This ultimately results in
the .text section shrinking slightly in size, which in turn changes the
offset of the .dynamic section.

Changing the offset of the .dynamic section causes the dynamic segment
size to grow by the same amount, which triggers a warning in
llvm-readelf because PT_DYNAMIC's p_filesz (0xa4) is no longer a
multiple of its sh_entsize (8):
- DYNAMIC 0x000c20 0x00000c20 0x00000c20 0x00098 0x00098 R 0x10
+ DYNAMIC 0x000c14 0x00000c14 0x00000c14 0x000a4 0x000a4 R 0x10
The size of the dynamic segment was already incorrect before the blamed
comment, as it should be 0x90 like the .dynamic section above (18
entries at 8 bytes per entry); it just so happens that 0x98 % 8 is 0,
whereas 0xa4 % 8 is 4, so there was no warning.
Looking at the section to segment mapping of the dynamic segment reveals
that it includes the .got section, as it is implicitly placed after
.dynamic by ld.lld's orphan section heuristics and inherits its segments
from the linker script.

Currently, host programs are linked with HOSTCC using the toolchain's
default linker. This can result in confusing behavior when using the
LLVM Kbuild variable (which states that the user would like to build
with the LLVM toolchain instead of the GNU one), as clang's default
linker is ld for most platforms, not ld.lld. The documentation mentions
HOSTLD=ld.lld is set but this variable is not used by Kbuild proper,
only within some tools/ projects. Kbuild provides the HOSTLDFLAGS
variable, which allow users to provide the '-fuse-ld' or '--ld-path'
flags to customize what linker is used, but this is not super obvious to
folks not familiar with Kbuild.
If the user has not customized the linker already using one of these
flags, default to ld.lld when using the LLVM variable, which is more in
line with user expectations when using that variable.

Commit 0c5b5c40dc ("spi: cadence-xspi: Add COMPILE_TEST support")
allows this driver to be built for 32-bit platforms, which causes a
semantic conflict with commit 4954d4eca4 ("spi: cadence-xspi: Support
32bit and 64bit slave dma interface"), as readsq() and writesq() are
only available when targeting 64-bit platforms:
drivers/spi/spi-cadence-xspi.c: In function 'cdns_xspi_sdma_read':
drivers/spi/spi-cadence-xspi.c:601:25: error: implicit declaration of function 'readsq'; did you mean 'readsl'? [-Wimplicit-function-declaration]

As there are no known 32-bit platforms that use this controller, revert

it has been applied for all versions of GCC and clang < 16.0.0. There
are no known problems with removing this for GCC but if one surfaces, it
can be restored under a CONFIG_CC_IS_GCC block.

The current minimum version of LLVM for building the kernel is 15.0.0.
However, there are two deficiencies compared to GCC that were fixed in
LLVM 17 that are starting to become more noticeable.
The first was a bug in LLVM's scope checker [1], where all labels in a
function were validated as potential targets of an asm goto statement,
even if they were not listed in the asm goto statement as targets. This
becomes particularly problematic when the cleanup attribute is used, as
asm goto(... : label_a);
...
label_a:
...
int var __free(foo);
asm goto(... : label_b);
...
label_b:
...
will trigger an error since the scope checker will complain that the
cleanup variable would be skipped when jumping from the first asm goto
to label_b (which obviously cannot happen). This issue was the catalyst
for commit e2ffa15b9b ("kbuild: Disable CC_HAS_ASM_GOTO_OUTPUT on
clang < 17"). Unfortunately, this issue is reproducible with regular asm
goto in addition to asm goto with outputs, so that change was not
entirely sufficient to avoid the issue altogether. As asm goto has
effectively been required since commit a0a12c3ed0 ("asm goto:
eradicate CC_HAS_ASM_GOTO") and the usage of the cleanup attribute
continues to grow across the tree, raising the minimum to a version that
avoids this issue altogether is a better long term solution than
attempting to workaround it at every spot where it happens.
The second issue is an incompatibility with GCC 8.1+ around variables
marked with const being valid constant expressions for _Static_assert
and other macros [2]. With GCC 8.1 being the minimum supported version
since commit 118c40b7b5 ("kbuild: require gcc-8 and binutils-2.30"),
this incompatibility becomes more of a maintenance burden since only
clang-15 and clang-16 are affected by it.
Looking at the clang version of various major distributions through
Docker images, no one should be left behind as a result of this bump, as
the old ones cannot clear the current minimum of 15.0.0.

Commit 150a04d817 ("compiler_types.h: Attributes: Add __counted_by_ptr

__counted_by_ptr, which made sense while 22.0.0 was the version of
LLVM's main branch to allow developers to easily test and develop uses
of __counted_by_ptr in their code. However, __counted_by_ptr requires a
change [1] merged towards the end of the 22 development cycle to avoid
errors when applied to void pointers.

Commit 3e86e4d74c ("kbuild: keep .modinfo section in
vmlinux.unstripped") added .modinfo to ELF_DETAILS while removing it
from COMMON_DISCARDS, as it was needed in vmlinux.unstripped and
ELF_DETAILS was present in all architecture specific vmlinux linker
scripts. While this shuffle is fine for vmlinux, ELF_DETAILS and
COMMON_DISCARDS may be used by other linker scripts, such as the s390
and x86 compressed boot images, which may not expect to have a .modinfo
section. In certain circumstances, this could result in a bootloader
failing to load the compressed kernel [1].
Commit ddc6cbef3e ("s390/boot/vmlinux.lds.S: Ensure bzImage ends with
SecureBoot trailer") recently addressed this for the s390 bzImage but
the same bug remains for arm, parisc, and x86. The presence of .modinfo
in the x86 bzImage was the root cause of the issue worked around with
commit d50f210913 ("kbuild: align modinfo section for Secureboot
Authenticode EDK2 compat"). misc.c in arch/x86/boot/compressed includes
lib/decompress_unzstd.c, which in turn includes lib/xxhash.c and its
MODULE_LICENSE / MODULE_DESCRIPTION macros due to the STATIC definition.
Split .modinfo out from ELF_DETAILS into its own macro and handle it in
all vmlinux linker scripts. Discard .modinfo in the places where it was
previously being discarded from being in COMMON_DISCARDS, as it has
never been necessary in those uses.

Using a prerelease version as a minimum supported version for
CONFIG_WARN_CONTEXT_ANALYSIS was reasonable to do while LLVM 22 was the
development version so that people could immediately build from main and
start testing and validating this in their own code. However, it can be
problematic when using prerelease versions of LLVM 22, such as Android
clang 22.0.1 (the current android mainline compiler) or when bisecting
LLVM between llvmorg-22-init and llvmorg-23-init, to build the kernel,
as all compiler fixes for the context analysis may not be present,
potentially resulting in warnings that can easily turn into errors.
Now that LLVM 22 is released as 22.1.0, upgrade the check to require at
least this version to ensure that a user's toolchain actually has all
the changes needed for a smooth experience with context analysis.

Commit 62089b8048 ("kbuild: rpm-pkg: Generate debuginfo package
manually") moved away from the built-in RPM machinery for generating
-debuginfo packages to a more manual way to be compatible with module
signing, as the built-in machinery strips the modules after the
installation process, breaking the signatures.
Unfortunately, prior to rpm 4.20.0, there is a bug where a custom %files
directive is ignored for a -debuginfo subpackage [1], meaning builds
using older versions of RPM (such as on RHEL9 or RHEL10) fail with:
Checking for unpackaged file(s): /usr/lib/rpm/check-files .../rpmbuild/BUILDROOT/kernel-6.19.0_dirty-1.x86_64
error: Installed (but unpackaged) file(s) found:

/usr/lib/debug/.build-id/0e/979a2f34967c7437fd30aabb41de1f0c8b6a66.debug
...
To workaround this, restrict the manual debug info package creation
process to when it is necessary (CONFIG_MODULE_SIG=y) and possible (when
using RPM >= 4.20.0). A follow up change will restore the RPM debuginfo
creation process using a separate internal flag to allow the package to
be built in more situations, as RPM 4.20.0 is a fairly recent version
and the built-in -debuginfo generation works fine when module signing is
disabled.

GCC would warn about this in the same manner but its version,
-Woverride-init, is disabled for a normal kernel build in
scripts/Makefile.warn. For clang, -Wextra in drivers/gpu/drm/Makefile
turns it back but GCC respects turning it off earlier in the command
line.
Of all the duplicate fields in the initializer, only nfl_bpg_offset is a
different value. Clear up the duplicate initializers, keeping the
'false' value for .vbr_enable, as it is bool, and the second value for
.nfl_bpg_offset, assuming it is the correct one since it was the one
tested in the original change.

A KASAN pass that removes unneeded stack instrumentation, enabled by
default in clang-18 [1], drastically improves stack usage in this case.
To avoid the warning in the common allmodconfig case when it can break
the build, disable KASAN for ghes.o when compile testing with clang-17
and older. Disabling KASAN outright may hide legitimate runtime issues,
so live with the warning in that case; the user can either increase the
frame warning limit or disable -Werror, which they should probably do
when debugging with KASAN anyways.

While this is a false positive error because __drm_exec_retry_ptr is
only ever assigned the label in drm_exec_until_all_locked() (thus it can
never jump over the cleanup variable), this error is not unreasonable in
general because the only supported use case for taking the address of a
label is computed gotos [1]. The kernel's use of the address of a label
in _THIS_IP_ is considered problematic by both GCC [2][3] and clang [4]
but they need to provide something equivalent before they can break this
use case.
Hide the usage of _THIS_IP_ by moving the CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING if
statement to its own function, avoiding the error. This is similar to
commit 187e16f69d ("drm/xe: Work around clang multiple goto-label

An (admittedly problematic) optimization change in LLVM 20 [1] turns
known division by zero into the equivalent of __builtin_unreachable(),
which invokes undefined behavior if it is encountered in a control flow
graph, destroying code generation. When compile testing for x86_64,
objtool flags an instance of this optimization triggering in
msm_dp_ctrl_config_msa(), inlined into msm_dp_ctrl_on_stream():
drivers/gpu/drm/msm/msm.o: warning: objtool: msm_dp_ctrl_on_stream(): unexpected end of section .text.msm_dp_ctrl_on_stream
The zero division happens if the else branch in the first if statement
in msm_dp_ctrl_config_msa() is taken because pixel_div is initialized to
zero and it is not possible for LLVM to eliminate the else branch since
rate is still not known after inlining into msm_dp_ctrl_on_stream().
Transform the if statements into a switch statement with a default case
with the existing error print and an early return to avoid the invalid
division. Add a comment to note this helps the compiler, even though the
case is known to be unreachable. With this, pixel_dev's default zero
initialization can be dropped, as it is dead with this change.

get_user()"), which was the first commit that started using asm goto
with outputs on RISC-V, builds of clang built with assertions enabled
start crashing in certain files that use get_user() with:
clang: llvm/lib/CodeGen/SelectionDAG/SelectionDAGBuilder.cpp:12743: Register FollowCopyChain(MachineRegisterInfo &, Register): Assertion `MI->getOpcode() == TargetOpcode::COPY && "start of copy chain MUST be COPY"' failed.
Internally, LLVM generates an addiw instruction when the output of the
inline asm (which may be any scalar type) needs to be sign extended for
ABI reasons, such as a later function call, so that basic block does not
have to do it.
Use a temporary 64-bit variable as the output of the inline assembly in
__get_user_asm() and explicitly cast it to truncate it if necessary,
avoiding the addiw that triggers the assertion.

sound/core/pcm_native.c:3308:6: error: cannot jump from this asm goto statement to one of its possible targets
if (put_user(result, &_xfern->result))
^

^
...
sound/core/pcm_native.c:3300:8: note: jump exits scope of variable with __attribute__((cleanup))
void *bufs __free(kfree) =

clang-17 fixed a bug in clang's jump scope checker [1] where all labels
in a function were checked as valid targets for all asm goto instances
in a function, regardless of whether they were actual targets in a
paricular asm goto's provided list of labels.
To workaround this, revert the change done to
snd_pcm_xfern_frames_ioctl() by commit f3d233daf0 ("ALSA: pcm: Relax
__free() variable declarations") to avoid a variable declared with
cleanup from existing between multiple uses of asm goto. There are no
other uses of cleanup in this function so there should be low risk from
moving this variable back to the top of the function.

After commit 600605853f ("scripts/gen-btf.sh: Fix .btf.o generation
when compiling for RISCV"), there is an error from llvm-objcopy when
CONFIG_LTO_CLANG is enabled:
llvm-objcopy: error: '.tmp_vmlinux1.btf.o': The file was not recognized as a valid object file
Failed to generate BTF for vmlinux
KBUILD_CFLAGS includes CC_FLAGS_LTO, which makes clang emit an LLVM IR
object, rather than an ELF one as expected by llvm-objcopy.
Most areas of the kernel deal with this by filtering out CC_FLAGS_LTO
from KBUILD_CFLAGS for the particular object or directory but this is
not so easy to do in bash. Just include '-fno-lto' after KBUILD_CFLAGS
to ensure an ELF object is consistently created as the initial .o file.
Additionally, while there is no reported or discovered bug yet, the
absence of KBUILD_CPPFLAGS from this command could result in incorrect
endianness because KBUILD_CPPFLAGS typically contains '-mbig-endian' and
'-mlittle-endian' so that biendian toolchains can be used. Include it in
this ${CC} command to hopefully limit necessary changes to this command
for the foreseeable future.

CalculateWatermarksAndDRAMSpeedChangeSupport() has a large number of
parameters, which must be passed on the stack. Most of the parameters
between the two callsites are the same, so they can be accessed through
the existing mode_lib pointer, instead of being passed as explicit
arguments. Doing this reduces the stack size of
dml30_ModeSupportAndSystemConfigurationFull() from 1912 bytes to 1840
bytes building for x86_64 with clang-22, helping stay under the 2048
byte limit for display_mode_vba_30.c.
Additionally, now that there is a pointer to mode_lib->vba available,
use 'v' consistently throughout the entire function.

After an innocuous optimization change in clang-22,

After an innocuous optimization change in clang-22, allmodconfig (which

A similar situation occurred in dml2, which was resolved by
commit e4479aecf6 ("drm/amd/display: Increase sanitizer frame larger
than limit when compile testing with clang") by increasing the limit for
clang when compile testing with certain sanitizer enabled, so that
allmodconfig (an easy testing target) continues to work.
Apply that same change to the dml folder to clear up the warning for
allmodconfig, unbreaking the build.

When building with -Wincompatible-function-pointer-types-strict, a
warning designed to catch kernel control flow integrity (kCFI) issues at
build time, there is an instance in the new HDMI v2 drm/mediatek code:
drivers/gpu/drm/mediatek/mtk_hdmi_v2.c:1331:31: error: incompatible function pointer types initializing 'enum drm_mode_status (*)(const struct drm_bridge *, const struct drm_display_mode *, unsigned long long)' with an expression of type 'int (const struct drm_bridge *, const struct drm_display_mode *, unsigned long long)' [-Werror,-Wincompatible-function-pointer-types-strict]
1331 | .hdmi_tmds_char_rate_valid = mtk_hdmi_v2_hdmi_tmds_char_rate_valid,
| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While 'int' and 'enum drm_mode_status' are ABI compatible, hence no
regular warning from -Wincompatible-function-pointer-types, the mismatch
will trigger a kCFI violation when mtk_hdmi_v2_tmds_char_rate_valid() is
called indirectly.
Update the return type of mtk_hdmi_v2_tmds_char_rate_valid() to be 'enum
drm_mode_status' to clear up the warning and kCFI violation.
